Issey Miyake debuted his first collection in New York in 1971 and began participating in Paris Fashion Week from 1973. His unique concept of clothing as “A Piece Of Cloth” was widely acclaimed throughout the world from the very beginning. An inexhaustible explorer, he has continued to open up new horizons for making clothes through research, experimentation and development while reimagining the relationship between the human body and clothing.
With aresolute determination of moving ever forward, Miyake has brought forth several epoch-making outcomes, including original pleated pieces from 1989, which would later develop into PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE, and the basic idea and process of A-POC in 1997, this time in collaboration with Dai Fujiwara, which would soon evolve into a design solution called A-POC INSIDE which was incorporated into the ISSEY MIYAKE collections as well as in all other brands owned by the ISSEY MIYAKE group.
Placing a high value on fostering various human resources and innovative technologies in the industry since the foundation of the brand, Miyake's spirit of making things has been passed on to a new generation of designers, past and present. It is Yoshiyuki Miyamae and his team of designers at the helm of the ISSEY MIYAKE Women's collection since the SPRING SUMMER 2012 Collection.
They are taking on further challenges with fresh eyes and new ideas, while combining the traditional techniques of Japan with new technologies.
ISSEY MIYAKE MEN
The collection was first released in 1976 together with the women's line, and became a men's collection in 1978. In 1985, the brand individually showed a men's collection at Paris Fashion Week. Starting with the Spring and Summer 2012 Collection, the brand name was changed to ISSEY MIYAKE MEN, and Yusuke Takahashi and his team have been placed in charge of creating it since Spring Summer 2014 Collection. By setting functionality and comfort of wear as the basic concept, the brand is able to constantly transmit new messages throughout the world.
PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE
'Pleats' was introduced into ISSEY MIYAKE in 1989, and has been developed every season thereafter. By 1993, it was ready to be launched as a complete and stand-alone brand and appeared as PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE for the Spring-Summer collection. This is a line that is positioned to embody one of the most fundamental concepts of Issey Miyake - where the true value of design lies in its integration into the everyday life and comfort of the wearer. This is clearly demonstrated in the development and evolution of traditional techniques of processing and of pleating material into a highly functional modern product - light in weight and easy to wear and handle. This revolutionary concept has won the respect and admiration of women throughout the world and contributed to the growth of an iconic brand - an ingenious fusion of creation, technology and business.
HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE
HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE is a brand created by Issey Miyake which proposes new clothing for a contemporary man’s modern lifestyle. The aim of the brand is to create clothes that can be active and dynamic for the wearer, inviting new possibilities.
The Three Concepts:
PLEATS: Pleating as a technique to create comfort, elasticity and wearable functionality
PRODUCT: Clothing as products of manufacturing that considers design and engineering
PRESENT: Everyday clothes which are flexible enough to meet diverse contemporary life situation
HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE is a new concept of clothing for the contemporary man, made possible by the development of Issey Miyake’s original pleating technology. The line has not only chosen the wrinkle-resistant and quick-drying fabrics, but also uses uniform pleats in order to prevent the garments from clinging to the skin. As a result, the clothes are comfortable, easy to care for, and lightweight.
In addition to the original ISSEY MIYAKE “garment pleating” process, whereby the pleating process takes place after the garment is cut-and-sewn into its final shape, some products of this line are sewn after the fabric is pleated. This process creates a more architectural structure and gives the clothing beautiful forms and accentuates their functionality.

BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE and BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE SPORTS LINE are the line of bags and pouches with the theme of “shapes made by chance.” It features a flexible functionality perfect for busy modern lifestyles.
Since its inception in 2000, it has established a unique array of products through its pursuit of intriguing shapes born out of simple pieces and diverse materials.
132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE
“132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE”, developed by Issey Miyake and his Reality Lab. team, is both a new label and a new evolution of “A Piece Of Cloth”. The process by which the clothing is made is groundbreaking, using a mathematical algorithm: first, a variety of three-dimensional shapes are conceived in collaboration with a computer scientist; then, these shapes are folded into two dimensional forms with pre-set cutting lines that determine their finished shape; and finally, they are heat-pressed, to yield folded shirts, skirts, dresses etc. These clothes are significant not only for the process by which they were made but because they are also made using recycled PET products, sometimes in combination with other recycled fibers.
“132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE” is Miyake's new creative challenge based on the ideas of “Regeneration and Re-creation” and a continuation of his perpetual search for new ways by which to make “clothes that bring joy and happiness to wearers”.
